I still prefer Lilly, but of course I "know" her more.
Really do think you should have included Lorelai, but I understand your reasons. Now... I know probably all of you know this, but I didn't watch the GG season finale. WHY did Rory drop out of Yale? WHAT WAS SHE DOING stealing a yacht??? Please somebody get back to me.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15114892.post-1124924837914389802005-08-24T19:07:00.000-04:002005-08-24T19:07:00.000-04:00Ooops - I meant Lilly on Cold Case, not WaT. But ...Ooops - I meant Lilly on Cold Case, not WaT. But I haven't watched CC religiously, so maybe I'd like her more if I'd seen every episode. (Then again, I'm only a casual GG fan and Lorelai is great in every ep.)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15114892.post-1124924614309510072005-08-24T19:03:00.000-04:002005-08-24T19:03:00.000-04:00Interesting list! My own personal list would include Lorelai Gilmore and Sydney Bristow and many of the citizens of Everwood, but I would definitely put Veronica Mars at the top. (Lorelai is really one of the all-time greats, though. So smart. So funny. So amazing in every way.)

I agree that Lilly on WaT is somewhat mysterious, but that makes her somewhat cold and aloof to me, and hard to become emotionally invested in as a character. (I find this to be true with most characters on procedural-type shows, though.)

On the other hand, I felt a deep emotional connection to Veronica Mars from the very first episode of VM that only deepened over time. She is such a fully realized character, so intelligent and witty and resourceful, and I was so completely emotionally invested in her journey from the very beginning that it became almost unbearable at the bitter and painful end of her quest. Veronica is almost like a younger version of Sydney Bristow in some ways, but it's her sense of humor and biting wit that puts her at the top of my list.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15114892.post-1124915629112581722005-08-24T16:33:00.000-04:002005-08-24T16:33:00.000-04:00Oh, I loved this list. I don't need to say that I ...Oh, I loved this list. I don't need to say that I completely agree with all you said about Lilly :) We want her to be more open, but if she is she won't be the Lilly we love. Quite a dilemma. Her contraditions are fascinating - like you said, she relates easily to victims and witnesses. But it's a one way street - she only gets personal when it comes to other people's feelings and facts; but if it's about her she shuts down. She is by far the most interesting and fascinating character I've ever seen on TV.
I loved your other picks too. Vivian is by far my favorite character on WaT (along with Danny, I wish you had written about him...). We've discussed recently the soapyness of WaT this season, and Vivian and Danny are the only ones who stayed "above" the soapyness all the time. Viv is completely down to earth and a amazing agent.
I liked too that you talked about Dr. Abbott because I really like him, along with Dr. Brown (they're actually the only reasons I watch Everwood every now and then). He's funny and has evolved from an apparently cold person to a nice guy (or so it seems from what I've watched).
I also liked that you mentioned Olivia Benson on your list. She's also fascinating and complex, and she relates to Lilly in many issues.
Last, I was pleased to see you at least mention Lorelai Gilmore on your post. She's another adorable, complex, intelligent character, and a real fighter.
Again, great picks and another great analysis! I don't get tired of repeating, your blog is awesome! :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
