'My Boys' Returns with Love & Laughs

When My Boys kicks off its third season tonight, things are going to be a little different for PJ. Let's just say, her Facebook status is about to change. Recently, star Jordana Spiro spoke with bloggers about the change during a conference call, and PTR's own LillyKat took part. "When you get into a healthy, stable relationship some people say that that’s the kiss of death for comedy, but I sort of feel like it – it just opened it up to all the different issues that come into play in a relationship," Spiro said during the call. But don't expect PJ's new-found relationship to look like a typical TV romance. "They’re not a couple that displays public affection constantly, and they don’t like to rub it in their single friends’ faces that they’re a couple, and they’re not always sitting on each other’s laps, or fawning at each other, and I think that that’s kind of a fun way to be on a TV relationship." She also hinted that all of the characters will have some "pretty big changes" this season. But, she was quick to point out that while some things change, others stay the same. "I think you’ll wait and see, but as far as like the friendships go and the dynamic between the friends that does stay the same."

The first couple of seasons of the TBS comedy have seen PJ go through a few ups and downs on the dating front. Spiro says that she can relate to this -- and many other aspects -- of her character. "Everything about PJ is very similar to myself, and in fact when I initially read this script, one of the things that I loved about it so much and responded to so strongly was the fact that she just felt so close to me, and not only to me but to my other girlfriends," she recalled. Spiro also believes that her 30-something alter ego is maturing as the show goes along. "It was always [creator Betsy Thomas's] goal to watch PJ become more of a woman, and sort of try to [grow out of] this extended adolescence that PJ finds herself in, and I think we see that happening, but I think that happens in a very realistic pace." And with this gradual maturity comes this new-found relationship, but expect a few normal bumps along the way. "I think that the challenges that are indicative to any relationship, which is, you know, what is the speed with which you go – with which you progress a relationship, and when is it time to move in, when is it time to say I love you, when is it time to move to the next steps."

'My Boys' Back for Another Round

TBS has renewed its popular sitcom My Boys for a third season. From the press release:


TBS’s MY BOYS is stepping up to the plate again as the network orders a third season of the critically acclaimed original sitcom. The series stars Jordana Spiro (Must Love Dogs, The Year of Getting to Know Us) as PJ Franklin, a 20-something sportswriter looking for love in Chicago. Surrounding PJ is her mostly male group of friends, played by Kyle Howard (Related, Orange County), Reid Scott (American Dreams), Michael Bunin (Scrubs), Jamie Kaler (The Family Stone) with Jim Gaffigan (That ‘70s Show, Ed). Kellee Stewart (Guess Who?) co-stars as essentially the only female influence in PJ’s life.

Look for the new season to kick off sometime in early 2009 on TBS.

Bobby's Cold Feet

I don't know about all of you, but I'm having a really bad case of the "conflictzies" whereby my mind can't wrap itself around the idea of who should be with whom on My Boys. This used to be an easy answer for me: PJ and Brendan. Now? Not so much. And it isn't like I would be opposed to PJ and Brendan (rather, I'd be completely on board), but this entire season has had me questioning whether or not I should switch into the PJ/Bobby camp. I did, then I recanted and then I just forgot the whole thing when he decided to marry Elsa. Enter Bobby's good time brother, lots of sparks, a secret relationship and you have a whole new pairing with PJ. But, he turned out to be everything that Bobby forewarned about and I was left with that don't-let-the-door -hit-you-on-the-way-out feeling. And then we had last night's finale and I'm even more conflicted and confused. He came back! The b*stard came back and he made up for all the trouble he caused and I started thinking that maybe I was all wrong about him and maybe, just maybe, I should reconsider this PJ/Bobby's brother hook-up idea. That was until Bobby got all confused about marrying Elsa and knocked on PJ's door. And he saw his stinkin' brother in her room!! Ugh! Now what am I supposed to think? If Bobby's going to renege on this marriage thing, then he better make damn sure he and PJ have real, true feelings for each other or he might end up regretting his decision. I'm already regretting mine. I should have just stayed in the PJ/Brendan camp. It was a lot less complicated.

Meanwhile, Stephanie and Kenny were trying to forget about what happened between them the night before. In his room. With Kenny ending up with her bra. Yeah. They went there. Perhaps, there should be a new "what happens in..." saying since everyone seems to make some silly, "Oh god please let me forget this ever happened" mistakes at weddings. By the end of the episode, he was returning her bra and they were shaking hands to signify their official return to friends. Complications over for now. Not so for PJ, who has found herself square in the middle of a family love triangle. And we are square in the middle of another famous My Boys cliffhanger. Here's to next season starting sooner rather than later!

PJ Gets Caught Between the 'Boys'

Kenny and Stephanie??!!! WTH??!! Didn't see that one coming! And they slipped it in right at the end when we were too busy focusing on PJ and Jack and Bobby and Jack's decision to leave after a rather public fight with his brother. I can't say that I'm too broken up about his departure. In addition to being obnoxious and extremely jealous, he seems to have a very volatile relationship with his brother and I don't think PJ wants to get caught between these siblings. If she did, I fear that a little spilled wine on a pretty dress will pale in comparison to the consequences it would bring.

After meeting the Newman cad of a dad, Bobby's original warnings about his brother seem much more plausible. Perhaps, the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree in the Newman family (apparently, Bobby takes after his mother?). Yet another reason why PJ is better off steering clear of Jack. It seems like he (and his father) could fill an entire book as opposed to a single chapter in Stephanie's novel. She could write a follow-up entitled You're Not a Great Guy, But... on those two.

So, going into next week's finale (how in the name of Dr. Brando are we already at the fickin' finale??!!), Bobby's set to marry Elsa (with Andy presiding over the ceremony), Mike is back in the saddle after a little afternoon delight, Brendan is on the outs after his potential boyfriend business partner got waylaid in Chicago (SIDE BAR: How hard did you laugh when Brendan made a mix tape for him?? I'm still laughing! This story line is awesome!), PJ is caught somewhere between Jack and Bobby, and Kenny is hooking up with Steph. Oh, this is going to be a fun finale.

PJ Wishes She's One of the 'Boys'

Last week, we found out one reason why it sucks to be the only girl in a group of guy friends. This week, we learned another -- no invite to the super fun bachelor party when one of those guy friends decides to tie the knot. PJ did not take this too well. It was made worse by Bobby's plea for her to attend Elsa's shower (which, to make matters even worse -- as if that were possible -- was thrown by a bunch of Bobby's aristocratic mother's friends). And while watching someone you barely know who justsohappens to be marrying the guy you secretly have feelings for open up different sized-strainers is a total blast and all, PJ found herself a little less than enthused. Not everyone was suffocating from the stuffiness in the air, though. Stephanie, who has made quite a name for herself with this relationship book You're a Nice Guy, But..., found her newest fan club at the shower. She relished in the attention and PJ had to bribe her with shoes and drinks just to get her to leave. Unfortunately, though, that smashing success didn't translate so well for members of the opposite sex. Later, she wound up losing a potential date when he learned that she was the author of the book that caused his girlfriend to dump him (turns out, he was an "Ike"). Poor Steph. She never seems to have everything fall into place together.

Of course, the biggest event of the episode was PJ admitting to Bobby that she asked him to Italy because she had feelings for him (back then, of course -- not now. Wink, wink). Can't say I was too surprised that Bobby was quite taken back by this bit of honesty. As much as he seems to love Elsa, I've often wondered if he would drop everything for PJ. He doesn't strike me as the "leave her at the alter" type, but I am curious to see what happens now that PJ is back in his picture.

PJ Helps the 'Boys'

Sometimes it's difficult to be the only girl in a group of guys. Just ask PJ. Last night, she was picking out a new work wardrobe for Brendan, planning a wedding for Bobby (whom she still secretly has feelings for), finding a date for Mike, counseling Kenny on dating two women at once, and attempting to get through to Andy that Jo has feelings for him. Whew! No wonder she was late to meet Stephanie and had a hard time sorting through when to be outright honest (like the accurate portrayals of the boys in Steph's books) and when to tell those white lies (e.g. she's super excited about Bobby's pending nuptials). It's a very fine balance that can get you into a lot of hot water if the scale tips even the slightest in either direction. Luckily, PJ was able to cover up her slip at the end.

Speaking of covering things up, Andy better quit while he's ahead before he ends up having something to cover up. OK, so he doesn't have feelings for Jo, but it's quite obvious (to everyone except Andy) that she is digging him BIG time. And Andy's naivety about the whole thing is only fueling that fire and ensuring that this innocent work friendship is going to blow up in his face. Yup, he has to nip this one in the bud before Jo starts to think that there's a real chance for something. Awkward!

PJ Holds Her Peace

Do we really think that Bobby is going to marry Elsa? I mean, he isn't, right? Are we even sure that she's doing it for the right reason? I believe his intentions are good and I think he does sincerely love her, but does she feel the same way? It's hard to say because, like PJ and the gang, we barely know her. She sorta flits in and out of scenes without leaving much of an impression. The one thing I do know, though, PJ isn't over Bobby or the idea of them reconnecting. This is slightly problematic for her because she never told him how she really feels and now he's in love with the hot nanny and, to make matters worse, set to marry her.

Meanwhile, Steph is transforming into a relationship guru thanks to the pre-sale of her first book You're a Great Guy, But. Which, by the way, sounds like a pretty cool book and now has me wondering why someone hasn't written it yet. Maybe the success of this project will help her stay out of doubt. And while Steph is busy writing about relationships, Brendan, nay "Dr. Brando," is studying for his MCAT. Now, I'd be lying if I said that I've never consulted the net for medical advice. I don't want to go to the doctor only to sit in a waiting room for hours on end and then never see an actual doctor either, but the net's only going to get you so far. And I'm pretty sure that Brendan was looking greener at the end of the episode than at the beginning. Let's hope he find a job soon -- for his health's sake!

PJ Versus the Pitcher

There are many highs and lows in life and, as PJ learned this week, they seem to come in pairs. For instance, finding out that you get to write a book with an ace MLB pitcher: high. Having the publisher tell you that aforementioned ace pitcher has flaked on the book: low. Finding out that you're the 34th writer that the publisher has chosen to try to get ace pitcher to write said book: even lower! Poor PJ. Here she was thinking that this book was going to be a huge career booster when it all fell apart. Of course, the deal was unraveling from the get-go when she basically had to twist this guy's arm just to get him to sit down and work on the thing. She tried the pep talk, but like everything else, it worked for a few seconds before the guy moved onto antiques, Project Runway or fruit.

Meanwhile, the boys were busy designing shirts for their own little Project Runway competition. Watching them with the sewing machine (and calling different times to use it) was hilarious! Of course, not as hilarious as the end result. Mike's open-back design was too funny. Bobby's was the best (obviously), but he clearly cheated. And while Brendan's was a little low-tech, I would have given him the win as well. The boy needed a pick-me-up after losing his job to an iPod and seeing his ex pregnant and happily married... to a British dude. Don't look for any of them on the real Project Runway anytime soon, though.

The Slump Continues

How did I know that this dinner party idea wasn't going to go as planned? PJ got roped into it and ended up continuing her slump when it was all said and done. Of course PJ being PJ, she lived up to her end of the bargain and invited two single friends. Well three if you count Steph, but she has sworn off men (and TV and internet shopping) -- not that that stopped her from making a play for PJ's potential love interest. And I do mean potential, as in he had a lot of potential until we found out that he bats for the other team. Leave it to Mike to bring a gay friend to PJ's dinner party. PJ reminds me of so many women -- smart, cute, fun and knows her stuff when it comes to sports. This should make her every guy's dream, right? And yet, she's stuck in a slump. I don't get it. Perhaps, it's her raging feelings for Bobby that are getting in the way.

If Bobby's harboring the same raging feelings for PJ, then he's certainly not pining away for her. Nope, he's busy painting the town with Andy's hot Swedish nanny. I can't really blame Bobby or Andy or Brendan or any other male character for falling all over themselves when it comes to Elsa. TV fans know that our very own Chuck fell for the same chick last fall when she showed up on NBC's Chuck as a double-crossing secret agent. Let's face it -- the girl knows how to play hot. Did I detect a few pangs of jealousy coming from PJ when Bobby walked into Crowley's with Elsa on his arm? Hmm... guess those "When in Rome" feelings have crossed the pond and a few East Coast states to make their way back to Chicago. Now, if PJ could only admit them to herself and Bobby that slump might just morph into a grand slam.

PJ's Mystery Date Revealed

PJ, feeling a little relieved because she thought she had been stood up, grabs her stuff and makes her way up to first class to sit with her date to Italy who just happens to be... BOBBY??? I have to admit, out of all of the possibilities (and the finger crossing/hoping that it would be Brendan), Bobby never crossed my mind, so paint me shocked! I like it, though. At first, I was a little unsure, but then PJ had that talk with Steph in the airplane lavatory about how she has feelings for Bobby again so she decided to ask him but she may/may not have kinda-sorta asked him in a "friend" way, so he might be unaware that the trip was supposed to be romantic. Bring on the complications! Things were heading down the right path at first with PJ and Bobby staying alone in Bobby's family villa in Italy, but then the wheels came off as Steph and her date split up forcing Steph to stay in the villa and cling all over the would-be couple. By the end of the trip, PJ was sitting with Steph in first class (with Bobby across the aisle) re-evaluating this whole romantic relationship with Bobby idea. And by episode's end, she had decided that she was over the idea. BUT, overreacting and calling the idea "gross" in front of the guys leads me to believe that she isn't actually as "over" the idea as she thinks. This should be interesting.

Meanwhile back in Chicago, the boys were busy getting themselves kicked out of Crowley's (thanks to Mike -- who slept with the waitress and didn't call her) and worrying about Bobby. Apparently, Bobby didn't let them know that he was going to Italy with PJ so they thought he was missing. I laughed so hard when PJ and Steph got in Andy's car at the airport and the first thing out of the very worried Kenny's mouth was, "There's no easy way to tell you this... Bobby's missing." After assuring the guys that Bobby wasn't, in fact, missing, PJ had to get them back into Crowley's. Of course after learning that Mike had used a fake Texas accent to sleep with the waitress, she decided to uphold his ban herself. Yup, My Boys is back and I'm lovin' it!

'My Boys' Goes for Second Home Run

When packing for a kickass trip to Italy, there are a few essentials that should find their way into every girl's suitcase -- even a tomboy's like PJ. A generous appetite (because you know the "Tour of Italy" isn't just referring to the Colosseum in Rome, the canals in Venice and the scenery in Tuscany) -- Check. A good pair of walking shoes -- Check. Fun evening wear -- Check. Oh, and someone to share all if it with -- Check?? When we last left PJ, she was agonizing over who to bring with her on this trip of a lifetime. The quest to find the right guy took its toll, though, and she decided to go stag alongside BFF Stephanie and her date. Game over. Or so we thought! In the closing seconds, she was called into first class to meet a mystery man holding a class of champagne. But, who did she choose? It's a cliffhanger that has had us guessing for close to a year. This Thursday, the mystery man will finally be revealed in the second season premiere. Will it be botanist Evan, globe-trotting reporter Thorn Packer, Cubs player Matt Dougan, or someone else?

Recently, series star Jordana Spiro graciously took time out of her busy schedule to chat via phone with bloggers (including PTR's LillyKat) about the upcoming season and her unlucky-in-love character. She told bloggers to expect some maturing this season. "PJ is going to grow up a bit, going to become more of a woman. We're going to sort of see her get beyond that young adolescence aspect that everyone has come to know of PJ," she promised. Spiro also talked about special guest star Nia Vardalos (who will stick around for a 3-episode arc) calling her "Amazing." When asked which episodes are some of her favorites, Spiro pointed to season one's "Mixed Signals." "This is one where I really felt in tune with the character ... she's going through all these motions, these exaggerations, thinking she's sending out all the right signals. Haven't we all done that?," she explained. But her favorite part of working on the hit comedy is her coworkers. "Going to work with people who are dedicated to creating a quality product, and who you generally like being around," she enthused. The second season of My Boys kicks off Thursday (tomorrow) night at 9:30 EST on TBS. Check out the preview:

PJ Tries to Win Back an Old Flame Tonight on My Boys

PJ (Spiro) gets a call from former boyfriend Thorn (guest star Sisto), and buried feelings begin to resurface on tonight's new episode. Meanwhile, Mike and Stephanie attempt to get their lives back on track. My Boys airs Monday nights at 10 p.m. on TBS. Sisto starred in last season's Kidnapped on NBC.

Reid Scott Talks About the Return of 'My Boys'

When TBS' My Boys finished the first part of its freshman season this past winter, things were up in the air for PJ (Jordana Spiro) and her best buddies. The Chicago sports writer was hitting home runs writing about the beloved Cubs, but striking out when it came to her love life. Perhaps the biggest potential mistake was the kiss she shared with her best friend Brendan (Reid Scott). Monday night, the show begins the second half of its successful freshman season and Pass the Remote had an opportunity to speak with star Reid Scott via email (thanks to the good folks at Sony Pictures Television, which co-produces the comedy) about the show's winning formula, what the second half holds, and the future of Brendan and PJ. PTR: My Boys is one of those sitcoms where, as a viewer, you can sit down and laugh for the entire half-hour. Why do you think it works so well?

SCOTT: I think it works so well because the characters are so real. As an audience member I think you can identify so closely with these characters that it's almost like laughing along with your own buddies, and yourself.

PTR: A lot of viewers want to see Brendan and PJ together. How do you feel about them as a romantic couple?

SCOTT: Yeah, I've heard that a lot, that's cool. I think Brendan and PJ are those singular kind of friends that have such chemistry it just makes sense. As far as romance goes, you'll just have to watch and see.

PTR: Do you guys get to travel to Chicago to shoot on location, or is the show shot entirely in Hollywood?

SCOTT: We shoot mainly in LA although we've actually been lucky enough to shoot some in Chicago both seasons. We were there in the middle of June this time around and had a blast. That is one fun town.

PTR: You've done some guest spots/recurring roles on network television, but My Boys is on cable. Lately, it seems that a lot of the edgier, more character-focused series are popping up on the latter. As an actor, do you see a difference between the work on network and cable? Is there more artistic freedom with either?

SCOTT: I think that the edgier stuff is ending up on cable mostly because cable is in the position to take the chances. TBS for example is trying to build an audience. When you're trying to do that you don't want to serve up the same old stuff that the networks are dishing out, you need to mix it up a little. And in turn, it seems the networks are following cable's lead and turning up their own edge dial a bit. And yeah, there is a bit more artistic freedom on cable right now. You don't have so many cooks in the kitchen, so to speak. When there are a lot fewer execs looking over your shoulder you really get to play more. That's what we as a cast all love about My Boys. We've got a great staff of writers, we get top notch directors and guest stars, our producers are all genius...we take our work seriously but when we all get together it's play time.

PTR: And finally, what sort of changes are in store for your character this season (that you can share)? What can we expect overall for the series this season?

SCOTT: This season all the characters are really opened up. We get to see sides of everyone that we didn't see last time. As for Brendan, without giving too much away, let's just say he really gets to explore his darker side. Some funny stuff...

My Boys kicks off the second half of its first season this Monday night on TBS (10 p.m.) with back-to-back episodes. 'My Boys' Hits it Out of the Park

Much like its main character, TBS' My Boys is charming, fun, and sure to make you laugh more than once an episode. It's the type of comedy that ABC and Fox would love to add to their schedules. Jordana Spiro stars as PJ, a tomboy sports writer who spends most of her free time hanging with her guy friends. She's a baseball fanatic, so her narration relates everything in life to America's favorite past time. Her guy friends, with the exception of her married and moving-to-the-suburbs brother (Jim Gaffigan), are single and PJ is trying to navigate dividing her time between her new love interest and her best friends. Imagine Sex and the City with a little more testosterone. Sure, the baseball analogies are a bit heavy-handed at times, but they're also a little clever. Spiro is absolutely perfect as PJ, and she'll have you wondering why you never knew her name before this show. The supporting players are strong as well. Newcomer Reid Scott is destined for big things in his future. Kellie Stewart plays PJ's best female friend, and the two make perfect foils for each other with Stewart's character playing the girly-girl to PJ's tomboy. There are many reasons to watch this charming comedy, but perhaps the most persuasive argument is the current TV state. 'Tis the season for reruns, so it's the perfect time to load your bases with all-new episodes of the incredibly smart My Boys Tuesday nights on TBS.
