Hugh Jackman Wins Over Oscar

By LillyKat
PTR Senior Staff Writer

A little more show. A little less biz.

These were Hugh Jackman's words when speaking to Barbara Walters on her traditional Academy Awards® after-show special - which was filmed BEFORE the actual Oscar® telecast.

And boy, did he have the right approach (as did the show's new producers).

Finally, an Oscar® telecast worth watching!

(And none too soon - especially given last year's Oscar ceremony was the least watched ... like, ever in history. The show needed to do SOMETHING different this year - and it did.)

Loved. It.

All Hail Wolverine: Hugh Jackman has got to be one of the coolest dudes on the planet. Decent guy. Family man. Funny. Not an ego maniac. Uber-talented (as in, can sing, dance AND act). And, he is so fantastically at ease in front of a crowd that it was just a joy to watch him handle the telecast with such aplomb. And to all those skeptics who were like, "Hugh Jackman? Can he host?" ... stick it in your pipe and smoke it. He. Rocked. It.

Everybody Wins: The revamped presentation of the actor awards whereby a selected group of previous winners stand on stage and salute each nominee's individual performance was FANTASTIC. It resonated so much more than the show-a-clip-read-a-name approach, and it allowed each nominee to truly be recognized (because it IS an honor to be nominated).

And the Award for Best Acceptance Speech Goes To ... Penelope Cruz. Her story of being a young girl and staying up late to watch the show in her very small corner of the world where she grew up ... awww. Talking about the show being a world unifying event to celebrate art ... double awww. Thank you, Penelope, for reminding us what it should really be about.

And the Award for Worst Acceptance Speech Goes To ... Sean Penn. Look, I know he's a great actor. I'm not disputing that fact. But the baggage that comes with acknowledging him means we - the regular schmo viewers - have to put up with his whole I'm-an-artist-I'm-above-all-this-crap attitude and/or a politically driven acceptance speech. He even admits he's ... uh, a difficult pill to swallow. So, hey, here's an idea, Sean: spare us. (Or go start a band with Joaquin Phoenix.)

Speaking of Joaquin Phoenix ...: Ben Stiller's spoof while presenting with Natalie Portman - GENIUS.

Two Words: Kate Wins YAY!! I've loved Kate Winslet since Sense and Sensibility. She's just a ballsy, no-nonsense, shoot-from-the-hip, dedicated actress who could give a rip about that which everyone else in Hollyweird obsesses about. She was way overdue on earning herself a statue, and her acceptance speech was a very close second to Penelope's. Go Kate!

Still Enchanting: Amy Adams. Friggin' adorable. I really wanted her to win for supporting actress, but her time will come. Bummer she isn't on a television show right now because she'd be an automatic PTR Fave - 'cause we're all about the decent, charming, genuine, honest and decent folks in Hollyweird. Keep on keepin' on, Amy.

Sal in Mega Mo: E!'s Sal Masekela is too cool for school. I am normally used to listening to him host the X Games over on ESPN, but he was so perfect interviewing everybody at the Governor's Ball that he actually made the REGULAR entertainment journalists look like goobs. Who knew the sports guys could schmooze the A-listers, eh?

It's A Slumdog World: Just as Penelope Cruz reminded us what the show is supposed to be about, the Slumdog Millionaire folks reminded us what it's like when the little guy wins. They were the little film that could. How cool was it to see so many of the young kids of the cast flown in for the event - some of whom who had never been on a plane. This is the side of Hollywood that is still worth loving: dreams can come true to those who are still willing to have - and follow - them. And when people are so genuinely shocked and honored when they win, you can’t help but cheer.

Fashion Report: You know I don't do the fashion thing, folks.

Brangelina Report: Puh-leze. Like I care.

You can get a rundown on all the winners and proceedings over at Oscars.org and Oscars.com.

SAG Nominations Announced

By LillyKat / PTR Senior Staff Writer

This is probably the only thing going right for the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) these days: the 15th Annual SAG Award nominations are out, and similar to the Golden Globes, we've got a few PTR Faves in the mix. Notably: Michael C. Hall and Dexter ; Kyra Sedgwick and The Closer.

Holly Hunter also gets a nod for Saving Grace, and Tracey Ullman is getting a well-deserved nod for her work on Showtime's Tracey Ullman's State of the Union (yay!). Happy to see Shirley MacLaine up again for her rockin' performance in the Lifetime miniseries, Coco Chanel.

(And I know this is a television blog, but can I just say: GO AMY ADAMS! Love. Her. Glad to see her up for best supporting actress in the motion picture, Doubt.)

With irritation and dissent running rampant within SAG's membership about its direction or lack thereof and its leadership's handling or lack thereof of negotiations with the studios to get a contract (what is it now ... six months and counting?), SAG will need to get together and play nice on January 25th, which is when the 15th Annual SAG Awards will air live on TBS/TNT.

Few PTR Faves in 'Globes' Noms

By LillyKat
PTR Senior Staff Writer

Well, we can't win 'em all.

Or nominate 'em all.

This year's Golden Globes Nominees are decidedly less PTR-favorish than last year. Our girl Kyra Sedgwick still gets a nod for her fantastic work on The Closer ; and, Michael C. Hall is nominated for his work on Dexter (the show also earns a nod for best drama). Other than that, not a whole lot as it pertains to our PTR Faves.

But hey, no writer's strike to cancel the ceremony this year.

Side note: Extra coolness that Shirley Maclaine is nominated for her role in the mini-series, Coco Chanel. She. Rocked. It.

Second side note: Good to see Debra Messing up for The Starter Wife, too. Have missed her being on television since Will & Grace went off the air.

PTR's Emmy Picks

This Sunday, we'll find out if our faves take home a statue on TV's biggest night. The 60th Primetime Emmy Awards will be handed out this weekend live on ABC. In the meantime, LillyKat and I thought it would be fun to make our picks on who/what we want to win in some of the biggest categories. Here's what we came up with...

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
Tony Shalhoub - Monk
Steve Carell - The Office
Lee Pace - Pushing Daisies
Alec Baldwin - 30 Rock
Charlie Sheen - Two & a Half Men

TVFan's Pick: Tony Shalhoub. The Monk star makes the series with his hilarious OCD detective.
LillyKat's Pick: Anyone BUT Steve Carell will do. I know that's harsh, but I just don't like the guy whatsoever, and I've never taken to The Office given I prefer the o-rig-i-nal UK version.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy
Tiny Fey - 30 Rock
Christina Applegate - Samantha Who?
Julia Louis-Dreyfus - The New Adventures Of Old Christine
America Ferrera - Ugly Betty
Mary-Louise Parker - Weeds

TVFan's Pick: 30 Rock's Tina Fey. I'm not a regular viewer of any of these series, but Fey's delivery and timing make her a stand-out for me in this category.
LillyKat's Pick:Again, anyone BUT Julia Louis-Dreyfus. I actually DO like her, but she's already won for both Seinfeld and The New Adventures of Old Christine. I prefer when the Academy quits rewarding the same person. That said, I'm partial to America Ferrera or Mary-Louise Parker.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series
James Spader - Boston Legal
Bryan Cranston - Breaking Bad
Michael C. Hall - Dexter
Hugh Laurie - House
Gabriel Byrne - In Treatment
Jon Hamm - Mad Men

TVFan's Pick: Dexter's Michael C. Hall. Hall is Dexter and without him, this show just wouldn't be the same. He brings such conflicted complication to the role and has us feeling sorry for his serial killer character.
LillyKat's Pick: Definitely Michael C. Hall. I am just dying (no pun intended) to have him be recognized for bringing to life one of the most compelling characters on television. But I'm wondering if it's going to be a Mad Men evening, and thus, Jon Hamm could find himself with the Emmy hardware.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Sally Field - Brothers & Sisters
Glenn Close - Damages
Mariska Hargitay - Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
Holly Hunter - Saving Grace
Kyra Sedgwick - The Closer

TVFan's Pick: Glenn Close. This is a difficult category given that it also includes the fabulous Kyra Sedgwick, but Close's portrayal of the uber-complicated Patty Hewes was, hands down, the best performance of last season in any category.
LillyKat's Pick:I cannot decide between Glenn Close and Kyra Sedwick. Purely on sentimental value, I want Kyra to win. She has delivered year-in, year-out yet has only ever been nominated, not won. I don't want her to turn into the Susan Lucci of the Primetime Emmys. On that fact alone, I'd like to see her finally get recognized. However, Glenn is just too darn good. There are hardly words to describe her captivating portrayal of Patty Hewes. So, if Kyra has to lose AGAIN, I'd want her to lose to Glenn.

Outstanding Comedy Series
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Entourage
The Office
30 Rock
Two & a Half Men

TVFan's Pick: The Office. This off-beat comedy never fails to make me laugh and marvel at its clever use of its faux-documentary style.
LillyKat's Pick:Hmm ... I don't watch much of any of these shows. I'll guess it'll be between The Office and 30 Rock (who surprised everyone last year, remember?)

Outstanding Drama Series
Boston Legal
Damages
Dexter
House
Lost
Mad Men

TVFan's Pick: Damages. This is the toughest category for me with Dexter and Lost keeping Damages company, but the FX freshman series absolutely blew me away. This first season was the finest season of any show I've ever seen. If Damages doesn't win, I might have to re-think lifting my Emmy ban.
LillyKat's Pick:I'd be happy with Dexter or Damages, with Damages possibly getting the edge given the intricacies of the show were just so captivating, and the entire ensemble cast turned in amazing performances tall the way around. But again, I'm wondering if we might see a Mad Men sweep. The good news is that sometimes the shows with the MOST noms go home with the LEAST awards. So here's to some of PTR Faves giving them a run for their money.

You can find out if these nominees and your faves take home the statues this Sunday evening on ABC (8 PM/7 PM).

And the Oscar Goes To ...

By LillyKat
PTR Staff Writer

Should it come as any real surprise this year's Oscar ceremony was the least watched … like, ever?

No.

Heck, they didn't even know they were going to have the ceremony complete with actors until about two weeks ago, which is when the writers strike came to an end. True, some could blame lingering effects of the strike for the dive in ratings (as in, viewers have made other arrangements to entertain themselves). Or, perhaps it was the fact that several of the nominees this year were practically unheard of and/or not your usual Oscar blockbuster/landslide/overwhelming group of favorites. For the record, I did not see any of the nominated films, and I confess reading the names of some of the nominees read more like attendees at a United Nations convention.

Other Points of Amusing Interest:

Stage Fright: Who would’ve thought Grey's Anatomy's Katherine Heigl would look like she was going to faint for presenting the award for Best Makeup? Complete fear/deer-in-headlights/OMG-what-am-I-doing expression. Weird. Is it really that difficult to be a presenter (especially when 15-year-old Miley Cyrus walks up and does her presentation like a pro)? Strange moment for Heigl.

And the Award for the Least Interested Winner(s) Goes to … Joel and Ethan Coen. Could these two look any less interested in winning for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture for No Country for Old Men? Geez, did we wake you guys or something? Was the Academy keeping you from an appointment? Compared to the incredibly moving speeches of Best Actress Winner Marion Cotillard, and Best Song winners Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, the Coens looked like they were passing kidney stones and/or couldn’t be bothered to say anything of substance. If it was supposed to be some sort of We’re-shocked-don’t-know-what-to-say vibe, it didn’t come off that way to this viewer. Rather, it seemed almost arrogant and/or like the whole thing was a complete waste of their time. Kind of a shame considering how many people never get to the Oscars let alone win. More than once. Go back to your corner in the sandbox, Coens. Sheesh.

Got Jack?: What would an Oscar ceremony be without Jack Nicholson in his usual customary front row spot? It just isn’t the Oscars without Jack somewhere in the building. I. Love. Jack. And he was even in the vicinity of the other beloved "Jack" (that would be Captain Jack Sparrow ... the always ingenius Johnny Depp).

B-T-L: The Honorary Oscar this year went to 98-year-old production designer Robert Boyle. With the writers strike illuminating the whole above-the-line / below-the-line divide in Hollywood, it was nice to see the Academy (whether on purpose or not) acknowledge what is considered a below-the-line crew person instead of the usual above-the-line director, actor, producer, etc.

Preggers Gone Wild: Is it just me, or is every actress in Hollywood pregnant? Is there a pregnancy virus going around that the rest of us don't know about? Kudos to host John Stewart’s “And the Baby Goes to …” skit, which put Jessica Alba, Cate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman in the running for who will give birth first (Blanchett looks to be the winner of that contest).

First Time Dibs: How cool was it to have Diablo Cody – a former stripper and blogger – win for writing Juno (her first screenplay ever)? This is the side of Hollywood that I still love: dreams can some true to those who are still willing to have - and follow - them. There actually were a lot of “firsts” in this year's ceremony, and I love firsts. People are so genuinely shocked, and you just can’t help but cheer for the fact they won.

Finally, a Suitable Billy Crystal Replacement: I liked Ellen. I liked Whoopi. I didn’t like Dave … but I have to say (and not being a Daily Show addict) Jon Stewart is pretty entertaining. I don't envy the task of having to make a room full of some of the most difficult people in the world laugh and poke fun at themselves. Stewart is a pretty good master at this. As was Crystal.

Fashion Report: Sorry, folks. This viewer doesn't care who is wearing what or why. You'll have to check out those other blogs for a rundown on dresses, shoes, jewelry and the like. I will say that several actresses (Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Garner, Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett) had some sort of sloppy hair pulled back off the face/neck thing going. Were they just having a really bad Lilly Rush hair day, or was that in this year? Hmmmm ....

You can get a rundown on all the winners and proceedings over at Oscars.org and Oscars.com.

SAG Awards Bring Back Red Carpet

By LillyKat / PTR Staff Writer

The red carpet is back.

Sort of.

The 14th Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards went on as planned Sunday - complete with star-studded presenters, winners and attendees (thank goodness, too, because I'm not sure I could really bring myself to watch another strange, awkward press conference á la the Golden Globes thing-a-ma-jig). We remeber that SAG was given a waiver by the Writer's Guild of America (WGA) to have writers script the show given the solidarity SAG has shown to the WGA during the ongoing writer's strike. Hence actors were able to attend the ceremony without feeling as if they had to cross the strike picket line.

The Academy Awards® show, however, remains in question. Stay tuned.

Below is a list of this year's SAG winners:

Movies

- Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis, "There Will Be Blood."

- Actress: Julie Christie, "Away From Her."

- Supporting actor: Javier Bardem, "No Country for Old Men."

- Supporting actress: Ruby Dee, "American Gangster."

- Cast: "No Country for Old Men."

- Stunt ensemble: "The Bourne Ultimatum."

Television

- Actor in a movie or miniseries: Kevin Kline, "As You Like It."

- Actress in a movie or miniseries: Queen Latifah, "Life Support."

- Actor in a drama series: James Gandolfini, "The Sopranos."

- Actress in a drama series: Edie Falco, "The Sopranos."

- Actor in a comedy series: Alec Baldwin, "30 Rock."

- Actress in a comedy series: Tina Fey, "30 Rock."

- Drama series cast: "The Sopranos."

- Comedy series cast: "The Office."

- Stunt ensemble: "24."

No Show for 'Globes'

By LillyKat / PTR Staff Writer

Roll up that red carpet, folks.

It's a no go for the Globes show.

Due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, the 65th Annual Golden Globe Awards telecast has been officially cancelled after a significant show of support by both movie and television talent who vowed not to cross strike picket lines to appear on the show.

In a statement last week, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) said its members would honor the WGA picket lines, and the WGA had vowed to picket the ceremony if the Hollywood Foregin Press Association (HFPA) chose to go ahead with the show.

Instead, all of this year's winners in all 25 categories will be revealed during an hour-long HFPA press conference at The Beverly Hilton to be covered live by NBC News beginning at 6:00 pm PST on January 13th.

Get Your Grammy Moment

From CBS:

THE RECORDING ACADEMY® + CBS INTERACTIVE + YOUTUBE + FOO FIGHTERS = "MY GRAMMY® MOMENT" 2008

UNSIGNED MUSICIANS VIE FOR A PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITY WITH THE GRAMMY-NOMINATED BAND ON "THE 50TH ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS," SCHEDULED TO BE BROADCAST SUNDAY, FEB. 10 ON THE CBS TELEVISION NETWORK

Following the successful "My GRAMMY® Moment" segment with Justin Timberlake on last year's telecast, The Recording Academy, CBS Interactive and YouTube will present the second installment: "My GRAMMY Moment" 2008 for THE 50th ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS, scheduled to be broadcast live from STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, Sunday, Feb. 10 (8:00-11:30 PM, live ET/delayed PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Continuing its mission of discovering and nurturing music makers, this year The Academy is giving unsigned instrumentalists the opportunity to vie for a performance slot with current five-time GRAMMY-nominated rock band Foo Fighters. Interested musicians should upload onto YouTube (www.youtube.com/mygrammymoment) — the official online partner of "My GRAMMY Moment" 2008 — up to a 60-second solo performance video showcasing their talent. Performers and presenters for THE 50th ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS will be announced in the coming weeks.

As part of a five-and-a-half-week event, which begins today and culminates on the Grammy Awards telecast, The Academy will work with CBS Interactive and YouTube to conduct a nationwide search with musicians uploading user-generated performance videos. The top 45 artists will be determined by a Grammy Blue Ribbon Panel, with the public voting and representatives of The Recording Academy to narrow the field to up to 20 semi-finalists who will perform with the Foo Fighters as part of an orchestra. The voting public will eventually select one winner to be the featured instrumentalist. Users may log on to CBS.com or directly to YouTube to access the video submissions, video viewing and voting site http://youtube.com/mygrammymoment. "My GRAMMY Moment" 2008 content will also be available on the CBS Audience Network and its more than 200 online partners.

All entries should be submitted by January 20th. Visit http://youtube.com/mygrammymoment for more on the contest

By LillyKat / PTR Staff Writer

'Tis the season for award nominations.

Even with the ongoing writers strike.

After earning Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress in a TV Drama, PTR faves Glenn Close (Damages) and Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer) also earned Screen Actors Guild (SAG) nominations for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series. Additionally, the gang over at The Closer were also nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

SAG will honor its own and celebrate the 75th anniversary of its founding at the 14th Annual Actors® ceremony on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008, at the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center, simulcast live nationally on TNT and TBS at 8 p.m. ET/PT, 7 p.m. CT, and 6 p.m. MT.

And, unlike the still-in-doubt-what-are-we-going-to-do-with the Golden Globes telecast if the Writers Guild of America (WGA) is still on strike (and actors/actresses are no-shows at the event), the WGA has already granted permission for one of its members to write for the SAG ceremony, thus potentially leaving the SAG Awards as the only major televised film honors to be broadcast as planned come 2008.

WGA Rejects Waivers for Globes, Oscars Telecasts

By LillyKat
PTR Staff Writer

From United Hollywood

LOS ANGELES – The Writers Guild has notified the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and dick clark productions that their requests for an agreement to allow writers to prepare material for the 65th Annual Golden Globe Awards show have been denied.

The Guild has also denied a request from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for a waiver in connection with the use of clips from motion pictures and past Academy Awards shows for use during the annual Academy Awards presentation.

In letters to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, WGAW President Patric M. Verrone described the Guild’s respect and admiration for both organizations, explaining that:

“Writers are engaged in a crucial struggle to achieve a collective bargaining agreement that will protect their compensation and intellectual property rights now and in the future. We must do everything we can to bring our negotiations to a swift and fair conclusion for the benefit of writers and all those who are being harmed by the companies’ failure to engage in serious negotiations.”

The signatories producing the Golden Globes and the Oscars are West Coast signatories. The WGAW’s Board of Directors concluded, reluctantly, that granting exceptions for the Golden Globes or the Academy Awards would not advance that goal.

----------

So folks, unless we have a strike settlement before either awards telecast (Globes in January; Oscars in February), the networks are going to have to get pretty creative on how they broadcast either ceremony. This would also need to include figuring out how to deal with the very real possibility that many of the top talents nominated for these awards will boycott both shows as a sign of solidarity with striking writers.

Stay tuned for more As The Strike World Turns.

'Damages' is Golden; Kyra to 'Close' in on Two?

By LillyKat / PTR Staff Writer

Patty Hewes would be so proud.

BJ wouldn't be too disappointed, either.

FX Networks (and PTR Fave) Damages lead the television series nominations for the 65th Annual Golden Globe awards, earning nods for Best Television Series (Drama), Best Actress in a TV Drama (Glenn Close), Best Supporting Actress in a TV Drama (Rose Byrne), and Best Supporting Actor in a TV Drama (Ted Danson).

Additionally, PTR Fave Kyra Sedgwick has earned her third Best Actress in a TV Drama nomination for her role as Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson on TNT's The Closer. We remember she won last year - can she make it two in a row? It's a packed category this year.

The Globes are scheduled to be broadcast on January 13th on NBC, but the ongoing writers strike could put a significant dent in that plan. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has requested the Writers Guild of America (WGA) grant the award ceremony production a waiver so the Globes could use writers on the show. But if the WGA rejects the request, we may have a less-than-entertaining show to watch - especially if fellow actors and actresses refuse to cross the strike picket line and not attend the show.

Stay tuned.

PTR Faves Shine on TV's Biggest Night

Even though I skipped "The Awards that Shall Not Be Mentioned" this year due to the atrocious snubbing of so many deserving television actors and shows, some PTR faves did not. And while my little one-blogger boycott continues, it does not extend to the wonderful folks who give me something to write about week after week. Here's a montage of some PTR faves attending television's biggest night this past Sunday evening in Los Angeles.

Television Goes 'Golden!' Plus, More Premieres in Primetime Pass!

I'm not sure I'm a big fan of the Golden Globes on a Monday night. There are certain things that should stay on Sunday nights even if Desperate Housewives' tremendous success seems overwhelming, and awards shows are one of them. Basically, the Monday broadcast threw me off and made it difficult for me to fully commit my attention to it because spending three hours of a weekday evening on one program proved more difficult than on a Sunday. That, and I really missed Medium! In any event, here's a look at the show's interesting, predictable and surprising moments along with the winners.

It was good to see some of the more deserving nominees actually win! I know it rarely happens with these awards shows. It was good to see Lost win for best drama, although I was sure Grey's Anatomy had that one all sewn up. I was surprised to see that the Hollywood Foreign Press association is still under Desperate Housewives' spell when it was once again named best comedy. Although, they weren't so enamored as to give the Globe to any of the series' main actresses - Mary Louise Parker walked away with the best actress in a comedy award for her role on Weeds. Is anyone else starting to get the sinking feeling that Marcia Cross is about to become the next Susan Lucci? I was very surprised (and a little disappointed) to see Steve Carell win for best actor in a comedy over both Jason Lee and Zach Braff. Geena Davis' win for best actress in a drama was somewhat surprising considering the fact that Commander In Chief has only been on the air for half a season (shouldn't there be a rule that in order to be nominated your show has to have completed a full season?), but she did deliver one of the better speeches of the night. Hugh Laurie's win for best actor in a drama was well deserved, and he also gave one of the best speeches. Here's a breakdown of the rest of the broadcast:

Most Awkward Walk to the Stage to Accept an Award: Sandra Oh after winning for best supporting actress for Grey's Anatomy. Could they have put her in a less convenient location? The poor girl had to weave in between tables for what seemed like 10 minutes just to reach the stage and accept her award. I know the table seating allows for a more relaxed atmosphere, but it also makes it nearly impossible to reach the stage if you're not sitting in the front.

Best Fake Story During An Acceptance Speech: Geena Davis' story about a little girl who came up to her before the awards and said that because of her show Commander In Chief, she wants to be president someday. Davis then followed the story with "Well, that didn't actually happen, but it could have."

Best Speech Written by Someone Other Than the Winner: Steve Carell's wife wrote his speech for him and she was sure to include a line that had him thanking her and saying how she sometimes wishes he would call when he was going to be late.

Most Gracious Winner: S. Epatha Merkerson once again walked away with this honor. Her tearful and genuine gratitude toward NBC for employing her for 16 years and her comment that her role in Lackawanna Blues was her first leading role in a movie made us all realize how powerful dreams can be and the importance of never giving up.

Overall, it was an interesting night filled with better-than-usual speeches and a few surprises. For a full list of all the winners (movies included), click on over to the Globes' official site. What did you think about the winners? Leave a comment with your thoughts.

QUICK CUTS

*ABC is halting production of its new Heather Graham comedy Emily's Reasons Why Not according to TVGuide.com. The show opened to mediocre ratings last week and ABC pulled it this week for a rerun of the premiere of The Bachelor. The network is still planning to air new episodes starting January 23rd according to its official web site for the show.

*Ellen DeGeneres is returning to primetime, but don't worry she's not quitting her day job. She and brother Vance DeGeneres are teaming up to create a new family comedy for the WB. The twist - some of the perspective will come from the family's pets. Ellen will provide the voice for the dog. No word on when and if the show will get officially picked up.

*And finally, this season is the last for Fox's Malcolm in the Middle and That 70s Show. The network announced the decisions in a press release touting its spring offerings. In the release, Fox refers to Malcolm as being in its "seventh and final season." The show moves to Sundays starting January 29th. That 70s Show will air its 200th and final episode this May. Also having its last season is the WB's 7th Heaven. The network officially announced that the family drama will not return for an 11th season due largely to budget concerns.

That's all for today. Be sure to tune in tomorrow for the Scrubies and thoughts on Law & Order: SVU. Plus, all the latest television news!

So there you have it. Do you agree with my picks, or do you think others will win? Leave a comment with your picks and you can catch the actual winners tonight on NBC starting at 8 p.m. EST.

Onward now to last night's intriguing hour of Cold Case. I kind of like it when they give us cases that aren't very clear cut because there really isn't a bad guy. I know these types of cases have to be hard on the family members of the victims, but they play very well to the gray area that seems to exist in most real life cases. Just pick up any newspaper or tune in to any TV newscast and you'll see what I mean. Cases aren't always black and white, and last night's teen suicide/not suicide was an excellent example of that murky gray area that lingers over many of them. Trevor didn't kill himself, but he wasn't exactly pushed either. The ironic part of the entire story was that he was trying to prevent another student's suicide attempt. While struggling to keep Boris from jumping, Trevor fell off the roof to his death. The hard part about cases like this is that there is no closing satisfaction as there is with the more cut and dry "bad guy" cases. I walked away feeling down about the truth surrounding Trevor's death and Boris' accidental involvement in it. The look on Lilly's face after Boris finally told the truth seemed to sum up my feelings about the case - it was now closed, but it certainly didn't feel resolved emotionally. There was a bit of emotional satisfaction in the closing moments when Trevor's parents finally met and embraced Dawn and also when Jeffries pledged to go after Dawn's stepfather for abusing her. Overall, an interesting episode that delved into high school dynamics without the usual tired storylines and cliches, and managed to surprise us along the way.

Everyone has a breaking point, even those who seem to have everything together after suffering the loss of a husband, an engagement to his killer, the realization that you watched said killer kill himself and a son's blackmail. It seems that Bree has hit that breaking point on Desperate Housewives. But instead of screaming and getting it all out or staying in bed all day while drowning in her own depression, Bree decides to handle this breaking point in her usual prim manner - she drinks wine, and a lot of it. In fact, she drinks so much while at lunch with a smitten detective, that she lands herself in jail for a DUI after said lunch. I loved how the other woman in the holding cell thought she was an escort and wanted to know how much she makes an evening! The irony was beautiful! Bree's life wasn't the only one falling apart. Lynette's jealousy issues resurfaced when she learned that Tom wanted to remain fertile in case something were to happen to her (he would still have options). She allowed the jealousy to take over and demanded he get a vasectomy. When he didn't go through with it, she learned that he is unhappy with his life and he quickly shut her out. Susan's antics with Dr. Ron and Gabby's nudity troubles provided some great humorous moments to balance out the heavier Lynette and Bree storylines. Overall, this seemed to be the type of episode that sets up some interesting future storylines.

About Last Night... Fox took the lead for the first hour of the night with the ending moments of football and the first hour of the return of 24, followed by Cold Case on CBS and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition on ABC. At 9, ABC took over with Desperate Housewives, followed by Fox's second hour of 24 and CBS's Sunday movie. The final hour of the night went to ABC's Grey's Anatomy, followed by CBS's movie and NBC's Crossing Jordan. For more on last night's ratings, visit Zap2it.

~Primetime Pass~
@8 p.m. - NBC broadcasts the 2006 Golden Globe Awards live from Hollywood. Over on Fox, it's the two-hour conclusion of the four-hour season premiere of 24.

@10 p.m. - ABC's The Bachelor: Paris narrows the field down even further when he has only 8 roses to hand out.

QUICK CUTS

*Fox is moving Malcolm in the Middle back to Sunday nights starting January 29th. The show's Friday night slot will be filled with reruns of The Bernie Mac Show beginning this week. No word on why the network decided to make the switch. Look for Malcolm in the Middle to occupy the 7 p.m. EST slot on Sundays when the show returns January 29th on Fox.

*And finally, it's TV on DVD Monday! Look for Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (season 2) to hit shelves tomorrow along with Doogie Howser, M.D. (season 3) and The Mary Tyler Moore Show (season 3). For the full list of releases, visit tvshowsondvd.com.

That's all for today. Be sure to tune in tomorrow for the Golden Globes Edition with all the winners, moments and everything else Globes. Plus, all the latest television news!
