AWESOME NEWS OF THE NIGHT...
Scrubs (9 p.m. NBC) - "My Musical." Sacred Heart is turned into a full scale Broadway stage when Patti (Stephanie D'Abruzzo) checks in complaining of hearing incessant music. While trying to determine the cause of this strange complaint the residents of Sacred Heart star in their own musical. Carla (Judy Reyes) and Turk (Donald Faison) tango over her decision to be a stay at home mom or to return to work, while Elliot struggles with telling J.D. (Zach Braff) that she doesn't want to be roommates with him anymore -- both girls hope that the boy's "Guy Love" will help them through the rough patch. To get a sneak peek at the episode, check out exclusive videos on iTunes (FREE).

My Name is Earl (NBC 8 p.m.) - "Kept a Guy Locked in Truck." Earl (Jason Lee) hits a snag when trying to cross someone off his list when the guy he once locked in a truck turns up dead. In true Earl fashion, Earl does anything he can to make things right - even if that means throwing a funeral for someone he doesn't even know. The funeral that features all the regulars at the Crab Shack and some strippers is anything but traditional. Meanwhile, to make their marriage seem more authentic, Randy (Ethan Suplee) and Catalina (Nadine Velazquez) look for an apartment together.

CSI (CBS 9 p.m.) - "Sweet Jane." Catherine and the rest of the CSI team find it challenging to get a good read on their new member as he joins them in tracking a recently active serial killer who has been killing since the 1970s. Tony Award Winner Liev Schreiber ("Glengarry Glen Ross," "The Manchurian Candidate") joins the cast in a recurring role, marking his first appearance in a broadcast television series. Academy Award Nominee, Emmy Award Nominee and Golden Globe Award Nominee Ned Beatty ("Network," "Homicide: Life on the Street," "Superman") guest stars.

Men in Trees (10 p.m. ABC) - "History Lessons." Marin, who is suffering from writers block and getting over Jack, volunteers to help at Elmo's fundraising rummage sale. Her publisher, Stuart (Jason O'Mara), makes an unexpected visit to help critique her book's second chapter. Meanwhile, Jack tries to pick up where he left off with former girlfriend Lynn (Justine Bateman), Sara comes back to town and is surprised to see Ben and Theresa back together.

One of SVU's Outsiders Finally Reappears

Picture curteosy of NBC.com

NBC Recap

If I were to analyze the episode based on the amount of sleaze the characters oozed or the number of times that Lake’s gut was mentioned, it would seem like “Outsider” was a dud. Not so, however; in SVU’s most SVU like episode this season, I finally saw something that I’ve wanted to see all season. Fin! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the “Cop Killer”/Lover, Ice-T, finally appeared in an episode for more than five seconds. It’s a miracle cast down upon us by the SVU gods. Or the writers, who it seems have finally utilized their most versatile character.

The episode prominently featured Fin and his son, Ken, which proved to be a little strange and ultimately quite annoying. While I loved seeing him in a normal role (you all remember last season’s disaster, “Strain” which was basically Ken’s national coming out party) he was the anti-SVU cop. He was obsessed with the detectives’ “lack of effort,” which was really them not doing anything illegal to obtain a tainted conviction. Finally, the illegal-ness stops, and someone, Fin’s son of all people, comes in and wonders why they don’t resume.

Introduce the random Brooklyn SVU dude, who listens to his scanner at night, operates on gut, and was as sleazy as… well, Trevor Langan. (Peter Hermann had some tough luck here.) He introduces the far fetched, but eventually true theory that his homicides are connected to Fin’s rape cases. A strange idea, since as Fin mentions later, murderers don’t usually progress backwards to just rape. However since Lake’s gut says he’s the same guy, we now have an extra detective on the case. (Where in the SVU world was Munch? Why can they not utilize them in an episode with Fin? Why?)

Lake: Benson and Stabler get gold stars in Cragen’s class, where does that leave you?

*Shakes man’s hand.* I wouldn’t go as far as hugging the man, because of his little encounter with Casey later, but right now he is my best SVU buddy. Did the writers even realize that they were writing this as they penciled it in? They’re basically sticking it to themselves now, unless they actually think that we only want to see Benson and Stabler.

Suspect: Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go handle more money in ten minutes than you’ll handle in a lifetime.

Haves vs. have nots anybody? It ultimately didn’t have anything to do with the episode, but it was still a very funny, and accurate, line.

Lake: My gut says he’s lying.
Fin: Your gut is a genius.

One of Lake’s (or his gut’s) many moments, he actually turns out to be right. Unfortunately, this lead doesn’t exactly turn out to help the case any, but the newest victim does. Third of three actually attacked in the course of the episode, the last victim is who finally cracks the case wide open. Handprints from where the perp tried to choke her are the link between the Manhattan rapes and the Brooklyn rape/homicides.

Casey: Yeah, I’ll run the subpoenas through the Medicaid fraud unit; he’ll think we’re investigating his billing practices.
Fin: Well if you pull that off Casey I’ll give you my badge.
Lake: And I’ll buy you dinner.
Casey: I’m not a cheap date.
Lake: I’ll remember that.

*Twitches and falls out of chair.* No! No! She can’t have just acknowledged that! Limers everywhere fell out of their chairs during that scene. I can’t tell what Casey is doing; the sleaze factor has now exceeded Trevor Langan’s amount by tenfold. The only non heart attack worthy thing that came of this encounter was:

1. We got to see Casey, which is always of the good. And,

2. Her hair definitely seems much redder, which is a squee worthy moment in itself.

Lake: My gut tells me that’s not our guy.
Fin: That’s not your gut, that’s indigestion.

Once again Lake’s gut makes an appearance, and once again he’s right. This time it was more pertinent; when the detectives discover the scrap book (yeah, the play along perp likes to see his own name in the paper and make comments on his crimes) it leads Dr. Chanoor to give up his son, who the detectives recognize to be the janitor at the doctor’s clinic, and the perfect mold to the desperate to be known signature.

All the ego stroking that the perp insisted on makes sense when the detectives meet Henry, Dr. Chanoor’s son. The good doctor led his son to believe that he was a waste of space and air, leading Henry to seek attention by raping women and making them praise him. (We don’t even need Huang to figure this one out; this man was desperate for any type of attention.) The psychology thankfully worked in the reverse as well; as soon as the detectives realized this was why Henry committed the crimes, they gave him exactly what he wanted. Praise for a clean and nearly undetectable job. After that, Henry opened up like a clam.

I don’t believe we’ve ever seen a sibling, or any relative for that matter, be someone’s defense lawyer, but this goes to show why that should never happen. Petrovsky chose to ignore the strangeness of the request that Henry be required to wear an ankle bracelet. And, how did the tech people lose the signal? Once the signal begins to move, aren’t they supposed to follow it?

The reverse psychology works again, and lake reels Henry in by offering to make him famous. Unable to resist, Henry yields to the power that is Fin’s excellent marksmanship.

There was a strange motif within this episode which only really made sense at the very end, which was the family life of two of the victims and the Chanoors. Ming’s father became overprotective of her when he found out that she was raped, threatening to sue Fin and the police department if he didn’t drop the investigation. When Kara’s (the second rape victim) father arrived, he instantly whisked her away to Italy. Dr. Chanoor, however, was exactly the opposite with his son. Cold, critical, and static. He had no qualms about yelling at his son in the hallway, and asserted many times that he thought his son was a good for nothing boy who had never earned his love.

This episode has been long overdue, but where was Munch? The writers don’t seem to understand that they have four detectives. This means that since Benson and Stabler are partnered together, Fin and Munch are partnered together. Further exploration would logically yield that when Fin appears in an episode, Munch should too. Alas, perhaps Munch is dating again and doesn’t spend so much time at work?

The serial rapist plot always makes for a good episode of SVU, and this one was no exception. In easily one of the best episodes of the season so far, the detective dynamic was good, the plot wasn’t obvious, and while Chester Lake was annoying, he did work well with Fin in the end.

'Cold Case' Gets Dark

To quote American Idol judge Randy Jackson, this weekend's episode of Cold Case was "just a'right for me." Perhaps, if it had aired during the previous season I would be talking about how good it was, but this poor episode found itself in the wrong season. This show is too strong and too at the top of its game for me to see this one as anything other than just alright. But, there were some very good things about it that I'll close with to end on a positive note. In the meantime, let's get to what I wasn't such a huge fan of the other night. Basically, it all boils down to the case. For the most part, I find the pacing of the one-night cases (where all of the flashbacks take place during the exact same day or night) to be slow, which causes the episode to drag a little. Also, I loved Donna Mills on Knots Landing, but I didn't love her soapy acting style on my straightforward Cold Case. Although if she was going to bring it, this episode was the right one. Talk about your dysfunction junction! How wigged out where you when the grandma (Mills) hit on her grandson in the hot tub??!! WTH??!! The twist of having the mother/grandmother as the pedophile instead of her ex-husband was interesting (if not completely sick, but then again, when is pedophilia not sick??).

Out with the bad and in with the good. I really like this Vera side story, and it's allowing us to see a completely different side to the hard-nosed, womanizing guy we're used to seeing. He's softer, happier and seems to be committed to making things work with Toni. Plus, I like the fact that he's getting the chance to play the father role. We all know that one of the biggest reasons why his marriage broke up was because of their inability to have a child. Vera wanted to adopt the tyke that showed up on PPD's doorstep, and now he has the opportunity to play dad to Toni's teenage son. It's an opportunity that hasn't been lost on him, either, as he took time to talk to Andre and play a little ball with him (the same ball that he used to loathe when it woke him up at the crack of dawn). I also liked Lilly's interrogation with Ginny and the sort of compassion that she brought to it. Again, there were parallels between Lil's life and the case (she and Ginny both had messed up mothers -- in different ways), and again, we weren't hit over the head with it. I loved the playful banter between Lil and Scotty in the beginning of the episode (nice continuity from my favorite scene a few weeks back). Finally, I liked the way that this case left me wishing that the murderer didn't have to pay for her crime. She was more of a victim than the actual victim. In the scheme of this season, though, this episode was a miss for me, so CC moves to 11-2 on the season.

I know it has been a very long time since I've done a Friday Fun edition of PTR (blame my new work schedule -- damn the real world for always getting in the way of the important things in life). Anyway, I'm taking Friday Fun out of hibernation because there are some excellent opportunities next week for fans of CBS' new comedy The Class as well as just television fans in general. Have you ever wondered how an episode of your favorite show goes from an idea to your television set? Well, it all starts with the table read, and Warner Bros. television and CBS are going to give you the opportunity this Monday to sit in on one of these tables reads live via the web! You'll also get to revisit the process on Wednesday with another live webcast. This time, you'll get to see an actual run-through of the episode with the cast and crew of The Class. Here's more info straight from Warner Bros. and CBS:

'Scrubs' Gets Private Practice Envy

The funny thing about Scrubs is, well, everything! Except, of course, when the show gives us its more serious side such as Carla's post partum depression. Watching her go through it is enough to give any non-mother pause, and that's why the story line works so well. It raises awareness about a serious problem, and it emphasizes the importance of getting help. You've gotta love a show that can make you laugh out loud and then make you think the way this ones does. And on the laughing side, the night's funniest moment came when Jordan entered the hospital and everything began shaking as if she were one of those gigantic evil creatures from a monster movie. You've gotta love the juxtaposition of Jordan the Monster and Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely." We also got new luxury suites at Sacred Heart, JD passing off Keith's body as his own with phone pictures to Kim, Elliot passing off her patients now that she's in private practice, the "Coxian" tone, Janitor and Dr. Cox teaming up to share the new luxury suite, "The Turks," Dr. Cox talking in text message short hand, JD's coconut scented hair, and web cam fun with Kim, JD, Elliot and Dr. Kelso. As usual, we also had our share of funny lines, so here's a look at last night's best, funniest and all around awesome lines in this week's edition of the Scrubies.

The Scrubies
"Well, there were two treatment options. When in doubt, I always go in the opposite direction of you." Dr. Cox to Elliot after she asked why he didn't follow her directions

"I know as a doctor disease is supposed to be the enemy, but I'm giving hepatitis and his band of infectious buddies a pass and I'm coming after you today." Dr. Cox to Elliot after he declared her the enemy for switching to private practice

"Ever since Jordan entered her third trimester, she has become a needy, bloated behemoth with a temper as big as her tree-trunk sized cankles." Dr. Cox to JD on why he doesn't want to go home

"Nice singlet. Does it come in hetero?" JD to Keith after Keith whipped out his high school wrestling uniform

"Or taking advice from a big Hollywood movie star and the dead science fiction writer he worships. You need to get some help." Jordan to Carla on her PPD

"If you talk again, I'm going to eat you!" Jordan to Turk after he kept interrupting her one-on-one with Carla about PPD

That's this week's edition of the Scrubies. If you have a line that you would like to nominate for a Scrubie, drop me a comment and I'll publish it in a future edition. As always, if you would like to discuss last night's Scrubs episode, leave me a comment with your thoughts. If you missed last night's hilarious outing, check it out on iTunes.

SVU Burned Its Chance to Regain Some Footing

Picture curteory of NBC.com

NBC Recap

This entire episode was a screaming prediction of what Elliot’s life could be like. Sparse visitation rights with his kids, a wife that hates his guts, anger management issues; it’s like Elliot was looking in a mirror! I had mixed feelings about this episode. The he said-she said storyline has been done way too many times before for it to be as effective and powerful as it would be if it was new. However, there were some awesome characterization moments that saved the episode from being a total train wreck.

Something new that we see from Olivia is her apparent willingness to bring her past into the case. Notice that this time she brings up the fact that Elliot is her longest relationship, and that she knows what it’s like to be on the end of emotional abuse, making the point that it can be as bad, or worse than, physical abuse. Before this, however, Olivia has been very weary when her past has been brought up, especially when it reminds her of the special bond she has with her job.

I had to laugh (with a bit of bitterness) at the point in the story when Olivia and Elliot were talking about the rape allegation as a possible “divorce strategy.” What a sad day, when people abuse the system to come out on top of some innocent bystander. Let’s hope now that Elliot has signed the papers, this won’t have to be added to his storyline.

I think we actually saw a little of everyone, except Warner, in this episode! A feat that hasn’t been achieved for many weeks. Huang was definitely in his element, profiling Miles as the type that probably hadn’t been violent toward his family before. Casey was used in character this week, a wonderful decision by the writers. Her encounter with Petrovsky seemed odd and out of place, though.

And we’re back to the illegalness. I thought we were done with this, since people already doubt that you can work together? See, there is this tiny thing called “parental consent,” and the funny thing about it is that you need it to talk to a minor. So, as in your instance, when a parent tells you that you can’t talk to their kid, that isn’t actually code for “oh, you can talk to them alone in school.” Elliot and Olivia are lucky that Valerie doesn’t press charges.

Why does it seem that in almost every he said, she said, the woman recants her story at some point? Is it a standard of these episodes that I’ve missed? It doesn’t make much sense at this point, with all the evidence stacked against Miles… unless she’s lying. This is the point where I was tipped off and knew that Miles was innocent, of the rape at least. They already illegally questioned her daughter and brought Miles in for a polygraph.

Fin: Your wife called.

*Looks around.* Was there a worse spot that this line could have been injected into? Even though the storyline is paralleled with Elliot’s life, we’ve already established that Kathy is trying to get Elliot to sign the papers. Been there, done that, don’t need any more tee shirts, thanks.

Elliot: I’m the longest relationship you’ve ever had with a man.

This plus the Elliot and Olivia fun time at the end of the episode must have had EO shippers dancing in their pajamas. The strange part is, it’s so true. The only stable relationship they have is with each other. And if this is stable, I’m worried what unstable is normally like. The Elliot and Olivia tension is back from its hiatus last week. (Continuancy!)

Fin: One divorce is enough for me, I can’t figure out how you did it four times.
Munch: You gotta play to win.

Munch’s words of wisdom for the week!

Elliot: Just nice to see someone else with anger problems.

Well, no, not really. I don’t want Olivia to have anger problems, because that means there are two unstablers in the partnership, and I don’t think network television could take that. Especially when their playing good cop, bad cop.

Casey: I thought you said they were working it out?

This is where my mind was fried and I had to rewind several times to make sure I saw this scene right. Kathy, and Olivia. Kathy with Olivia. Kathy called Olivia. And man, is it all out in the open now, no more fanfiction fantasies. Kathy confirmed that she was jealous of Elliot and Olivia’s relationship. She was worried that Elliot preferred spending time with Olivia rather than spending time with her and their kids. I’ve been on Kathy’s side the entire time through this, but this meeting was low; meeting with Olivia to ask her to convince Elliot to give up his marriage.

Kathy: What happened to the stunner?

So, everyone else did recognize that Dani was amazingly good looking. Good to know.

Casey: That doesn’t bode well.
Me: Well, her being burned sorta doesn’t bode well either.

Plastic bullets are my new best friend. I don’t think the characters or the viewers could deal with a shooting right now.

Valerie dies, Miles didn’t rape her, but he’s in jail, Tessa is pretty much scarred for life, Elliot signed the divorce papers, and Elliot and Olivia are sitting on his front stoop at five in the morning. The logical end, of course. They talk about everything that happened, and then it just... ends. Elliot mentions that he’s signed the papers, and Olivia suggests that it was the right thing to do, though she doesn’t sound completely convinced of it herself. Maybe because that makes him the third SVU detective to get a divorce, and they’re all single now. It wouldn’t boost her confidence that she’s ever going to find someone to settle down with, that’s for sure.

The Elliot and Olivia interactions in this episode were just enough to keep me awake and interested. Whatever problems Olivia is beginning to have, they’re going to have a profound impact on her work if their relationship stays in this rut.

Next week looks like the episode that could get us on track: serial killers are almost always in the best episodes of the season, so pass the remote!

'Cold Case' Breaks the First Rule of Fight Club

I was just talking about how the little scenes on Cold Case this season are a major contributor to my newly revived love affair with this show, and then they go and give us multiple fantastic little scenes in one episode! That scene where Vera was paying the parking ticket over the phone, hung up when he saw Scotty coming, and then exchanged funny barbs with Kat will go down as one of the show's funniest. I'm laughing at it all over again just typing up what happened! But it wasn't just this little scene because we also had a great scene earlier between Vera and Scotty where said parking ticket originated ("Fix a parking ticket -- that's the oldest lie in the book." Later, cut to Vera paying the ticket over the phone with his credit card.). There was also a cute scene with Vera asking out his neighbor, and her calling him on his parking ticket gesture, and of course, the final scene with Vera and his neighbor after their big date. I am so glad that the writers brought back the team chemistry and lighter moments from season one because they had been lacking the past couple of seasons and the show suffered from it. It's good to see these guys having fun together. With all of these emotional cases, it makes sense that they would need the release. Speaking of which, where was Lilly during all of the fun stuff? She really isn't the stick in the mud that they all think she is -- just ask Scotty. Never mind, his lips are sealed because what happened in Nashville stayed in Nashville.

I suppose that I should talk about the case a bit. I'll admit that I wasn't too psyched to watch a "Fight Club" episode, but this one was about a lot more than I thought (as usual). We had daddy issues, abandonment issues, and a plausible murder with motive. Obviously, Lilly could relate to James (her father left), but as usual, the show didn't hit us over the head with the connection. After all, Lilly naturally feels sympathy and a strong will for justice with every victim, so making them even more personal just gets to be ridiculous over time. Surprisingly, the story was really about Tanner -- a kid who seemed to have it all except a loving father. He hated his father's constant pressure so much that it drove him to take it out on an innocent man who resembled the man who raised him. This is a common theme on Cold Case as we're accustomed to seeing Lilly take out her anger at her mother on suspects who have a history of being bad parents, but Tanner went way too far. To make matters worse, the very man he was trying to beat the life out of wound up beating the life out of his friend in front of him. And the poor man who was simply having car trouble in the wrong place at the wrong time ended up dead as well. Tanner's father wanted to make everything go away with high-priced lawyers to protect his son's future, but what he didn't realize was that he was the one responsible for ruining it. With Cold Case, there's always room for the viewer to dig a little deeper and think a little differently. It seems that the New Year has brought us the same awesome, inspired Cold Case that the second half of the last year gave us. CC moves to 11-1 on the season.

Brownie points for using The Fray's "How to Save a Life" at the end, even if that song will always be Scrubs' (they played it first).

Welcome Back Housewives!

“Bree Hodge?”

“I’m Alma Hodge, I believe we have someone in common.”

*Bree faints*

This, is how you start back a season of ‘Housewives’.

Only problem…the momentum died. We cut to Kayla arriving at Tom and Lynnette’s and she’s solemn and maybe even a bit snarky. Which leads me to a few questions;

Didn’t Kayla stay with Tom and Lynnette all the time? So, what’s up with the apprehension from the boys? Shouldn’t they be used to her already? Kayla doesn’t know the rules of the house? She spent weekends with the Scavos, the girl knows their house rules. The whole storyline is forced and unbelievable. Where did our original ‘Housewives’ go?

Next we see Gabby on a date, a picnic in her front lawn. She gets a call from Carlos who wants to interrupt her date. We’re lead to believe that Carlos wants Gabby back, only to learn later (through no noteworthy storyline) that it’s a secret admirer.

Alma shows up at Bree’s house and Bree has a dinner party to show her friends that Orson’s wife is still alive, so he couldn’t be a murderer. Problem, Susan has already reported that Orson and Monique had an affair. The cops show up at the dinner party to question Orson and Bree finds out that Susan called the detective. Bree orders Susan to leave and Susan lets it slip that she saw Mike. This leads to Ian becoming angry and jealous. Is anyone surprised? I think I called it early on that Susan would screw up her relationship with Ian by obsessing over Mike.

Honestly, this episode was a snore. I really was hoping that the ‘Housewives’ would kick it up a notch and give us some interesting storylines, but I’m sad to report…it’s all going downhill. Who cares anymore? The conflict is forced, the resolutions are too fast and, like the conflict, forced. I just don’t get as giddy as I once did when I see ‘Desperate Housewives’ on the TiVo. Maybe it’ll get better, but I keep saying that and well…I’m still snoring.

Weekend Primetime Pass

Cold Case (Sunday 9 p.m. CBS) - "Knuckle Up." A video clip that shows a promising college bound young man who disappeared in 2006 involved in the underground subculture of bare-knuckle brawling is found on the Internet and Lilly reopens the case. (VCR/TiVo Alert: may be delayed due to football)

Desperate Housewives (Sunday 9 p.m. ABC) - "No Fits, No Fights, No Feuds." Gaby accuses Carlos of sabatoging her new relationship, Tom and Lynette try to make Kayla feel like part of the family, and the residents of Wisteria Lane are shocked by Bree's dinner guest.

Without a Trace (Sunday 10 p.m. CBS) - "Tail Spin." The team searches for an air traffic controller who vanishes after he almost let two planes collide on his watch. The team initially thinks that Rawlings may have disappeared because of things going on in his personal life -- the death of his wife and estrangement from his son. However, the deeper the team digs, the more things seem to point elsewhere. (VCR/TiVo Alert: may be delayed due to football)

Real Life Scheherezade Doesn't Live Up To SVU Name

Pictures curteosy of simplified-evolution.net

By Trublu
PTR Staff Writer

Click here for the NBC Recap

First and foremost, “Scheherezade” was the first episode of the new year, and yes, was the last episode that Mariska Hargitay filmed before going on maternity leave. Why the writers decided to put the episode here, I don’t know, because it doesn’t fit in any way. My initial impression after the episode ended was: Was that even an episode of SVU? The case was definitely not SVU related, and even though Elliot was asked as a favor to talk to Judson Tierney, the writers could have at least tied the case into the squad a little bit.

In true random SVU fashion, we start out with Elizabeth and Dickie’s confirmation ceremony. This didn’t serve any purpose to the rest of the story, didn’t enhance the plot in any way, and left me wondering if Elizabeth and Dickie were even sixteen yet. (The actors certainly didn’t look the part, and all the other confirmees looked much older than them. Continuancy please!) Two interesting notes on this however:

1. Saint Michael is the patron saint of cops and firefighters, or at least as designated by said cops and firefighters (in other words, it is not official by the Catholic church, just by the cops and firefighters themselves.)

2. Elizabeth’s chosen name, Clare, is probably referring to Saint Clare of Assisi, who is the patron saint of television. Coincidence?
(Above information courtesy of wikipedia.org)

After this touchingly misplaced scene, we are quickly reminded that this is pre-August footage, which means we have more Mariska-ornaments! First they tried to hide the baby bump with a black coat, which, while slimming, wasn’t quite enough at that stage of the game. So, out come the boxes! Olivia is strategically holding a box of greeting cards in front of her in pretty much the only scene where we see her entire body. For the majority of the episode, she is in Tierney’s room, sitting down beside his bed.

“I don’t know what your dad did to you sweetie, but you need professional help.” – Judson Tierney

The man may be a murderer, an adulterer and a thief, but I would give him a hug right here if I had the chance. Finally, someone on screen that isn’t Elliot said the words we were all longing to hear… or at least I was. Olivia needs to move past what her father did to her. While this is a show primarily, practically solely, focused on victims of sex crimes, not every woman who is mad at her father was assaulted by him.

That said, there was a definite parallel between Sheila and Olivia. Both were children born of an encounter outside marriage, and both were raised by mothers that (they thought) hated them. Sheila thinking so because she believed she was the child of another woman, and Olivia because she was conceived through her mother’s rape. Tierney died before Sheila could get closure; is this a sign for things to come for Olivia?

When Olivia finds the keys next to Tierney’s wife’s grave, I felt suddenly like I was transported into a Nancy Drew computer game. For those of you who have never played before: All too often a player is presented with unusual sets of keys; the catch is, there are a million locks that the keys could open. So, one must try all of them. And, according to the laws of life, it would be the last lock in the room that would be opened by the keys. In this case, Elliot was our Nancy Drew, and we were the people frantically clicking away at that mouse. At least Elliot did eventually find the trunks that were opened by the keys. Millions of dollars on the right, a dead body on the left. I’ll take the trunk on the right, please.

Elliot: Classic 70s look.
Melinda: Brings back memories.
Elliot: Of what, you in diapers?
Melinda: Bless your heart.

Now it’s time for more “Weird Facts” with Melinda Warner! Did you know? Mummification can occur within a short period of time in the right conditions. *The More You Know*

Another random fact that the writers chose to include for whatever reason. Another fact, though: notice that the name of the robbing duo was “The Fedora Bandits,” the type of hat Munch is known to wear. Just a fun fact!

Fin: Forty-eight hours and you solve 21 bank jobs, a kidnapping and a murder. What, are you trying to make us look bad?
Elliot: Well, you know, for once, Catholic guilt is a good thing.
John: I thought we Jews had a corner on that market.

Funny exchange, but unfortunately the extent of Munch and Fin’s appearance in the episode. With the return of Olivia, we’ve seen dramatically less Munch and Fin than what we were seeing in the Dani Beck era.

Casey: Legally there’s nothing I can do.
Elliot: Do something Casey!

I guess he’s suggesting that Casey do something illegal… But then later Casey flips right around:

Casey: Maybe you should tell him that Mollinax is out so that he can die in peace.
Elliot: I can’t lie to the guy.
Casey: He won’t know.
Elliot: I will.

Whoa, where did that come from? That’s incredibly out of character for Casey Novak, the ADA who risked her career early on to tell a wife and a mother that her husband had AIDS in season six’s “Lowdown.” Casey’s earlier attempt to obtain a statement from Tierney was out of character as well; as much as the guy couldn’t speak because he was coughing, Casey didn’t press him at all. Normally, Casey would have gotten straight to the point and tried to get as much of the statement as possible.

The only things this episode accomplished were portraying a touching resolution to a family feud, and pick a very appropriate name. The last scene, where Tierney died with Olivia by his side (and not his daughter) was very appropriate and worked extremely well with the rest of Olivia’s actions in the episode. The closing shot with Sheila in tears was very well done and perhaps the highlight of the episode.

Scheherezade, the name that every viewer was probably struggling to pronounce, was the best episode title in a while. As per Huang’s description (this guy knows a lot) Scheherezade was a character in the story “1001 Arabian Nights” who told a story to her husband with a cliffhanger ending each night in order to avoid being killed. (Unlike our main character in this story, Scheherezade didn’t die.) Tierney was certainly a storyteller, and a good one at that.

My big “beef” with this episode is that the characters were written completely out of character, and the case wasn’t even a sex crime. Even though it was filmed before Mariska’s maternity leave, the episode was still meant to follow “Choreographed,” but all the hostility between Elliot and Olivia has totally disappeared. I don’t mind that it’s gone, but it shouldn’t have disappeared overnight. Or, in our case, over the period of three weeks.

Unfortunately, Amanda Green, who wrote my favorites “Ghost,” “Night,” “Tragedy,” and “Counterfeit,” crashed and burned with this episode. Hopefully this was just a one time slump, and we can look forward to more Amanda Green episodes in the future.

Brian Dennehy (as Judson Tierney) provided a wonderful performance as the death bed confessor.

For next week: No preview after the episode (reason for which is unknown; as of late, “Burned” is still airing on January 9th) but from online descriptions it looks like we will at least be getting back to SVU cases. So, pass the remote!

'Scrubs' Channels 'House'

Sure, the Christmas trees, presents, lights and eggnog are an awesome way to pass the holiday season, but you have to admit, having your favorite shows back is even better! I've been spending the week trying to wind down from the craziness that is the holidays and get back into my TV routine, but last night's great episode of Scrubs was just what I needed to get right back into it. So many funny moments, so little time to type! We had an entire episode that paid homage to Fox's House (complete with an even more cantakerious than usual Dr. Cox, a limp with a cane, and medical mysteries), Elliot's last day as she moved across the hall to private practice, Janitor's business cards, JD naming a star "FreckleFart90" for Kim and her loving it, Ted going down after getting hit with a paintball (one of the show's Funniest. Moments. Ever!!), JD's romantic leg curl, JD's assertion that he and Dr. Cox are teammates, the kitten cure, and an exaggerated romantic finale. And these antics were just the beginning because there were plenty of funny lines as well. Here's a look at last night's best, funniest and all around awesome lines in this week's edition of the Scrubies.

The Scrubies
"Look, I know you all curl up on your futons at night dreaming of cracking a real-life medical mystery so that some doctor-slash-supermodel will want to touch your eruption button." Dr. Cox to his interns after they referenced television doctors

"Chin up you ugly bastard." Dr. Cox to one of his interns

"You're like a prostitute that gets paid up front then bolts from the restaurant after dinner." Dr. Kelso to Elliot after she left for private practice

"Don't say hate, Ghandi. You kids throw that word around so much it's lost all of its meaning. Now, I have to find a word stronger than hate to describe how I feel about others.... I mega-loathe you all." Dr. Cox to Turk

"Wouldn't I be a great spokesperson for things?!" JD after picturing himself as a spokesperson for kitten therapy

New Years Resolutions with Character

Welcome back and happy 2007! I hope you all had a very happy holiday season. Of course, the most exciting news of the new year for any TV fan is that our favorite shows are beginning to return with all-new episodes! With each passing year, a new one is ushered in and it is tradition to set out our list of resolutions for the New Year. Most of the time, we fail to accomplish these goals past the first couple of months, but it's fun to think that this year may be different. So, why should it be any different for your favorite characters? Here are some of PTR's faves, and what we feel they should be resolving to do in 2007.

Veronica Mars (Veronica Mars) - Stop allowing my pride to get in the way of my personal relationships.

Danny Taylor (Without a Trace) - Tell Elena how I feel about her.

Samantha Spade (Without a Trace) - Find work-appropriate clothing that doesn't have a plunging neckline and stop making every scene with Martin awkward (we broke up 2 seasons ago for Pete's sake!!).

Nathan Petrelli (Heroes) - Stop being such a jerk.

Elliot Stabler (Law & Order: SVU) - Attend anger management sessions, reconnect with my family, and stop doing illegal stuff on the job! -- Trublu

Olivia Benson (Law & Order: SVU) - Get over my issues with Elliot and lose the 'tude. --Trublu

Casey Novak (Law & Order: SVU) - Dye my hair red! --Trublu

Brennan (Bones) - Read up on pop culture, stop trying to pretend that Booth and Cam's little trysts aren't bothering me, and try to forgive my father.

Jack (Lost) - Stop moping around because Kate's hot for Sawyer, get over my daddy issues, and tell the Others to get lost.

Gil Grissom (CSI) - End my ill-advised relationship with my co-worker.

Marin Frist (Men in Trees) - Allow myself to be vulnerable by telling Jack how I truly feel (to hell with that pregnant chick -- the kid's not even his!) and find my own place to live (the hotel room is getting old).

Joy (My Name is Earl) - Beat those damn bogus charges against me so I don't have to listen to (and try not to laugh at) my deaf lawyer (although, she is hilarious to listen to! But I'm gettin' tried of the Sister Joy routine), hide Mr. Turtle (just to see Darnell get all upset) and get Earl to cross me off his list again (I love when that do-good booger kisses up to me!).

JD (Scrubs) - Find a way to finally get that hug I've been wanting from Dr. Cox, tell Turk how much he means to me or just show him by taking him to the mall, and try not to hate Keith just because he dates Elliot.

Dr. Cox (Scrubs) - Continue to ensure that Janelle never gets the hug she so desires, make at least one intern wet himself, and tell Bob-O to go to Hades (and make sure that he really does this time).

Lilly Rush (Cold Case) - Stop allowing fear to dictate my personal life, let Scotty in a little more (our hotel talk was nice), realize that the only thing standing between me, Ray and happiness is our differences and my fear that they can't be overcome, and extend the olive branch a little further in my mother's direction (after all, her mistakes fueled my resolve to be a better person -- so, I do have that to thank her for).

So, there are some of PTR's character resolutions for 2007. Will they come true? We'll have to tune in to find out for sure. In the meantime, what are you character resolutions? Leave us a comment with your thoughts.
