BREAKING UPFRONTS NEWS: NBC Makes Changes, Keeps 'Scrubs,' Cancels 'Conviction'

REVISED!!! (5/25/06)

It's Day 1 of the network upfronts, and there are casualties already. NBC released its fall schedule today and missing from the list were Conviction, Teachers, E-Ring, Four Kings, Joey and Surface. Pass the Remote favorite Scrubs will return "at some point later in the season" as will Crossing Jordan Medium, so it sounds like we'll be playing the waiting game once again with Scrubs and Medium (boo NBC!). The network is also shifting a lot of its shows, although the widely speculated ER move was just that - speculation. The show will return to its Thursday night slot with virtually continuous episodes until December where it will go out with a cliffhanger until it returns in the spring. In the meantime, new show The Black Donnellys, from Oscar winner Paul Haggis (Crash), will occupy the Thursday slot. My Name Is Earl and The Office will stay on Thursday nights, but shift an hour earlier. Law & Order: CI will move to Friday Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. 9 p.m. to accommodate the network's new Sunday night NFL coverage. Here's a breakdown of the new schedule (new shows are in caps):

MONDAY
8-9 p.m. "Deal or No Deal"
9-10 p.m. "HEROES"
10-11 p.m. "STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP" (new day and time)

TUESDAY
8-9 p.m. "FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS"
9-10 p.m. "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" (new day and time)
10-11 p.m. "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit"

WEDNESDAY
8-8:30 p.m. "20 GOOD YEARS" (new time)
8:30-9 p.m. "30 ROCK" (new time)
9-10 p.m. "The Biggest Loser" (new time);
10-11 p.m. "KIDNAPPED" (new day and time)

THURSDAY
8-8:30 p.m. "My Name Is Earl"
8:30-9 p.m. "The Office"
9-10 p.m. "Deal or No Deal" (new day and time)
10-11 p.m. "ER"/("THE BLACK DONNELLYS" in January 2007)

FRIDAY
8-9 p.m. "Crossing Jordan" (new day and time)
9-10 p.m. "Las Vegas"
10-11 p.m. "Law & Order" (new day)

SATURDAY

9-11 p.m. Drama Series Encores

SUNDAY

Okay, I officially think the networks are in collusion to really annoy me. Thursday at 8 is already crowded with Survivor, Smallville, Everybody Hates Chris, and now Earl. Luckily with CW either Chris or Smallville will move, but I'm sure ABC will announce this as Lost's new timeslot to really get to me.

Boo hoo on Surface and Teachers. NBC really bites!!! At least they are keeping Scrubs. Thank goodness for small favors. Any chatter about another network picking up Surface??
Scooter, I feel your frustration.

No chatter about anyone else picking up Surface or any other canceled show for that matter. As Matt Roush at TV Guide always says, the chances of other networks picking up canceled shows is always slim at best. I have a feeling Surface knew about the cancellation awhile ago and everyone has moved on to other projects. At least we did get some closure with that show.
