'Cold Case' Plays 'In Plain Sight'

When I saw this week's episode involved the Federal Witness Protection program, the first thing that came to mind was, "Cross over!"  I so wanted In Plain Sight's Mary to show up in Philadelphia.  Of course, that would have made for an entirely different episode, but that wouldn't necessarily have been a bad thing.  This outing was full of potential.  There was so much room for a really intricate, intriguing case with the WITSEC and mob connects, and yet, it all came down to a father not wanting to lose his daughter (who wasn't leaving anyway).  It was all a little ho-hum for my liking.  I wanted WITSEC excitement and mob antics, not your typical run-of-the-mill CC story.  I wanted a break in the formula because this show does that so well, but alas, we did not get it.

There were a few funny moments between Vera and Jeffries and the ADA and Kat.  Speaking of which, I first thought that the writers were setting up a future Lilly/ADA relationship which of course, got me thinking about Lil and Kite and how the show should totally revisit that one before they go setting her up with another ADA.  But then toward the end of the episode, I started to wonder if they were aiming for a Kat/ADA hook-up.  All I can say is, what's with the show's pension for bringing together cold case detectives and ADAs?  First Lil, then Scotty and now maybe Kat and/or Lil (again)?  Interesting.  Of course, I could be dead wrong and all of this would just be a moot point.  Time will tell.

Overall, another so-so episode of CC.  The show moves to 14-0-1 on the season.  Screencap courtesy of RichE.

It wasn't the best, but I think the writers should just stop writing in relationships. The episode itself needed improvement, too bad we're not going to have another episode until March 8th.

Just hope the next one is better, or it's probably time for the series to end ..

Great minds think alike, TVFan! :-) When Lilly said "Are you in WITSEC?" my first thought was "MARY!" I SO wanted to see her come blazin' down the hallway. How cool would it have been to have this ep be a crossover? Alas, we can dream.

Aside from my constant thinking how much BETTER the ep would've been WITH the crossover concept, this was another snoozer for me, though I do like Anthony Lapaglia's son as the ADA. So neurotic - good comic relief. But any ADA connection always reminds us of the previous ADA stuff, so then it becomes a Been There-Done That feeling.

And I know it's a completely shallow comment, but I guess they've decided to go back to making Kathryn Morris look like a corpse with the ghastly make-up job. She just did NOT look right in this episode. I do not understand how CC justifies making her look so awful. We remember when the fans of The Closer wrote in to the show to say, "Please stop with BJ's ridiculous red lipstick" ... and they DID.

CC should take note from the volumes of comments over the past several seasons regarding the decline of KM's appearance, and they should pay attention how NOT to make their lead look as if she: a) hasn't slept for 8 days; b) came straight from the morgue; c) looks as though she hasn't eaten in a month.

I just don't get it. This woman looks fine when she's NOT on the show. It's bizarre.

I can't figure out whether it's bad make-up, harsh lighting or a combo of the two. Also, doesn't the show have a new DP? Could this be the problem? I don't know. It's crazy!

I have noticed they've got a couple of new crew people this season - and I believe one of those is the DP (or at least it's a rotating DP situation).

Good point on the lighting. I don't like the lighting this year - camera angles seems to be staring straight into the light at times, or there is this bizarre back-glowy nonsense.

The only back-glow-light scenario I want to see is Roma Downey lit up as Monica the Angel on Touched By An Angel. :-) (You knew I had to work TBAA into this post SOMEHOW ... LOL!)

Why can CC not go back and look at Season 2?!?!?!?!? PERFECT lighting, color, hair, make-up, Lilly-ness, storylines ... (sigh).

;-)

I really hate the makeup artists as well. Why they just turn her into a complete vampire, and call it even??

I thought that the guy who plays the ADA was the brother of Anthony Lapaglia??

You're right, LII ... I meant to say Anthony Lapaglia's brother, not son.

Oops. Good catch.

The episode first. I was a little disappointed by this one, though not to the extent of some. The synopsis I'd seen implied there was a bit more action. Maybe I read too much into it.

Of course the actual murder not being mob-related did seem a little bit of a let down. However, I thought it just emphasised the tragedy of it all. Here were two men who'd given up so much, and put their, and their family's, lives in danger to do the right thing. One killed the other over the idea of possibly not seeing his daughter for a while, reverting back to a mob-style response.

Lighting. The show does seem to have adopted a style whereby the office scenes often include a strong light source (desklamp normally) in the background in the middle of the shot. It creates an interesting effect, not unattractive, but it is over done.

And now to my favourite subject: me! Nah, not really! I mean Kathryn of course.

I don't understand how, or why, CC insists on making Kathryn look so odd. I think she looks much the same this season as she did last though. You only have to look at photos from Kathryn's trip down-under a year ago to see how beautiful she is with little makeup and natural light (the ones by the sea, in the white t-shirt). That was in the middle of the writers strike and the episodes shot either side of that time had Kathryn looking as she does on CC now.

Lilly looked much more natural in some of the early episodes this season, usually in her scenes with Eddie such in the bar at the end of Glory Days. So they can do it when they want to.

Come on CC crew, sort it out!

I agree with you RichE, how about letting Kathryn herself do the makeup. I'll bet that she can do a much better job that this " Corpse Look".

I don't think I post pics here (and it is not really an appropriate place for them) so here is a link to a set of photos of KM at a recent event.

Little make-up, natural, gorgeous.
