L is for Lilly & Liar, but Definitely Not Love

Did my girl Lil just throw around the "L" word on tonight's Cold Case??!! Oh my gosh, so much to say about this Lilly personal drama! I don't think that she meant it. No way. I think a combination of feeling like she needed to say it because Joseph said it to her and feeling guilty for seriously considering Ray's proposition (because, let's face it, she's still hot for him) forced her to say it back the next day. Too bad her lips were moving, but the words she was saying weren't jiving with her actions. OK, so she didn't ride off into the night with Ray (again), but she also didn't take Joseph's call, nor did she call him back that night. In fact, he had to track her down the next day, and even then, she still seemed like she was in total avoidance mode. Then, she just tells him that she loves him too! Yikes!! In the closing moments, she ignored his call for the second time this episode. Does this sound like "love you too" behavior? Things were going along so well for these two (which, of course, meant that they had to go bad soon -- this is TV) and Lilly was sooo adorable with her new-found happiness and conversation about donuts and then bam! The "L" word got in the way and a hunky motorcycle riding ex. Lilly's conflicted! I love it! Of course, she's also scared because things are getting too real with Joseph. She did have a nice revocery when he told her that he loved her, though ("Yeah?" "I don't know what to say."). I half bought that she wasn't in complete panic mode on the inside. We know she has abandonment issues stemming from her father and following through most of her former relationships, but I think her complete reversal with Joseph set a new record. I'm afraid that she's going to go running into Ray's arms because there is no threat of commitment with him, and then Joseph will leave and she'll be right back where she started. What happened to "I can change" and "I'm tired of walking home alone" Lilly? It seems that the "L" word sent her into hiding! She really is one of the most complex and fascinating characters on television thanks to some excellent writing and unmatched acting (Where is Kathryn Morris' Emmy??!!).

Alice may not be alone, but Cold Case certainly is -- on top of the crime show heap. With CSI settling for mediocrity (with the exception of last week's episode) and a ridiculous inner-office romance, Without a Trace sticking with its so-so status of the last few seasons and Law & Order: SVU missing Mariska Hargitay (although, I am liking Connie Nielsen), Cold Case has quietly risen to the top. In fact, the series is having a revitalization after a third season that sort of cruised through its episodes without leaving a memorable mark. This season has brought us fascinating characters, compelling cases and all while stepping up the personal stuff. Kat (Tracie Thoms) is the best addition to any series last season. She is an interesting character and a welcome addition to the CC team. I'm in Cold Case heaven this season, and I can only hope it continues. Tonight's case was excellent. The love story between Alice and Donovan was tragic, wonderful and exciting. I have always said that this show covers race issues better than any other, and tonight's episode proved me right. It also shines whenever the cases take us back a little further, even though these tend to not hold my interest as well as the newer ones. Tonight's story was well done, and I was happy to visit the beautiful flashbacks under the direction of David Von Ancken. And we finally got an unsympathetic doer with a plausible motive and murder scene. The guy was a bastard plain and simple, and I kind of liked that for a change. To conclude, Lilly's a liar, the doer's a bastard and Case is awesome once again!

Line(s) of the Night:
Vera (after stumbling upon Lil and Joseph): Why can't I meet a nice girl at a halfway house?
Lilly: Save it!

How sad was that scene when the victim was lying there dying? CC really knows how to get your emotions going. That is for sure!
